“It’s like that old story – you can’t keep snakes in your backyard and expect them only to bite your neighbours. Eventually, those snakes are going to turn on whoever has them in the backyard.” Hillary Clinton once said this about Pakistan. Well, the saying can now be used for North Korea as well. In the last few months, North Korea has test-fired many missiles that landed on Japanese shores. Going by the media reports, one such missile went rogue and crash-landed in North Korea itself, damaging buildings of the area.
On 28th April 2017, North Korea launched Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile which was initially thought to have disintegrated. However, according to reports, the missile landed in Tokchon which has a population of around 200,000 people. The explosion is expected to have caused significant damage to industrial and agricultural buildings. However, casualties during the clash haven’t been ascertained as yet.
Despite several failures, a Hwasong-12 was successfully test launched on May 14 last year— leading the way for the introduction of the Hwasong-14/KN20 intercontinental ballistic missile. North Korea’s aggressive missile testing ratcheted up tensions between Pyongyang and Washington. North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un recently stated that a ‘Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.’ To which the US President Donald Trump replied, “Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”
Last year, Kim Jong-Un called US President Donald Trump a “dotard” after the American leader vowed to “totally destroy” North Korea if the US was forced to defend itself. Responding to which Trump said, “They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.”
