Who is Dr K Sivan? Meet new ISRO chairman – Things you may not know about this noted IIT Bombay scientist

Well known scientist Dr K Sivan has been appointed as new chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation.

Dr Sivan completed his PhD in Aerospace engineering from IIT, Bombay in the year 2006. 

Well known scientist Dr K Sivan has been appointed as new chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He will replace AS Kiran Kumar, who had been at the helm since January 14, 2015. Dr Sivan, who is currently the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, will take over the new role on on January 12, 2015. He graduated from the Madras Institute of Technology in aeronautical engineering in 1980 and completed Master of Engineering in Aerospace engineering from IISc, Bangalore two years later. Dr Sivan completed his PhD in Aerospace engineering from IIT, Bombay in the year 2006.

The scientist joined ISRO in Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) project in the year1982. Dr Sivan has played major roles in the end to end mission planning, mission integration analysis and mission design. Since joining ISRO, he held a number of responsibilities.Sivam also has various publications in journals and is also a fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Aeronautical Society of India and Systems Society of India.He also received a number of awards in his career which include Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research award for 1999 and Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from Sathyabama University, Chennai in April 2014.

His announcement for the post has come two days before the proposed historic launch of the ISRO’s 100th satellite alongside 30 others in a single mission from Sriharikota. The space agency is slated to launch the first PSLV mission after the unsuccessful launch of the navigation satellite IRNSS-1H in August 2017. “The 31 spacecraft, including weather observation Cartosat-2 series satellite, will be launched by PSLV-C40,” ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC) director M Annadurai was quoted as saying yesterday by PTI. “When the last satellite is ejected out it will become the hundredth satellite,” he added as per the agency.

As per the space agency, the PSLV-C40 will launch the 710 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation and 30 co-passengers, which in total weighs around about 613 kg, on January 12 at 09.28 am. The PSL will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. Satellites include nano satellite and one micro and each from India, three micro and 25 nano satellites from six countries including from Finland, Canada, Republic of Korea, France, US and the UK. Last year on August 31, India’s mission to launch its backup navigation satellite IRNSS-1H on board PSLV-C39 was unsuccessful after a technical fault on the final leg after a perfect launch.
